Chapter 470: We Are Not Playing with Them. We Are Going Home!
Children's emotions come quickly and go just as quickly.Early the next morning, Tushan Jingci set aside all of her feelings and headed to Qianxue Peak for class.
And as her book attendant, Xiao Mo naturally had to follow along.
Qianxue Peak was for young demon children, and the Qianxue Study Hall on that peak taught nothing more than introductory foundational learning.
Once these young demon disciples had absorbed enough of the basics, they would move on to other peaks to study deeper and more advanced subjects.
In the study hall, Tushan Jingci did indeed find quite a few children her own age.
There were boys and girls alike.
These young demon disciples were either descendants of demon kingdom royal families, or the children of various sect masters. Their bloodlines were all extraordinary by any standard.
Tushan Jingci even recognized some faces from her own birthday banquet, among them the Celestial Demon Kingdom's First Prince Chen Jue, the Fire Demon Kingdom's First Prince Lou Huo, and the Thunder Roar Sect master's closing-door disciple, Lei Qiu.
When they saw Tushan Jingci, their eyes lit up with delight, and they came forward one after another to greet her.
The other children in the study hall all turned to look at Tushan Jingci as well.
Even the other little demon girls thought Tushan Jingci was beautiful and beautiful children generally had no shortage of others wanting to be their friends.
Not to mention that their elders at home had specifically told them to get on good terms with Tushan Jingci.
So when these children saw Tushan Jingci, each of them was thinking of a way to strike up a conversation with her.
The one thing they found odd was why her book attendant was a human.
Though, it had to be said, this human was rather good-looking but no matter how good-looking he was, he was still only a human.
Before long, as the sound of the bell spread across Qianxue Peak, the teacher walked into the study hall right on time.
This teacher carried the aura of the literary Dao about him, but the horn on his forehead revealed his demon heritage.
Because book attendants like Xiao Mo had no standing to study within the hall, they had to step outside and listen from the courtyard beyond.
Xiao Mo listened to the teacher's lecture drifting from inside while also keeping an eye on the other book attendants.
The other book attendants looked at Xiao Mo with eyes full of contempt.
Xiao Mo understood. They held his human identity in the lowest possible regard.
It was a feeling not unlike seeing an item that normally appeared on the dinner table inexplicably sitting down in a chair alongside them.
Xiao Mo even had the sense that if they were not afraid of offending the Mount Tu residence, they would likely have already been looking to cause him trouble.
Setting the thought aside, Xiao Mo turned his attention back to the study hall and continued listening to the teacher's lecture.
Inside, Tushan Jingci had started out paying careful attention, but quickly found herself feeling bored.
"Every individual word this teacher is saying, I can understand perfectly. So why is it that when they are all put together, I cannot understand them at all?"
Tushan Jingci propped her chin in her small hand, her expression carrying a touch of dejection.
Shortly after, Tushan Jingci's gaze drifted to Xiao Mo, and she sneaked a little wave at him.
Xiao Mo, seeing it, smiled and gave a nod, then shook his head, gesturing for Tushan Jingci to pay attention to the lesson but Tushan Jingci tilted her chin up with a small huff, then extended her soft, pale little hand, wanting to play rock-paper-scissors with Xiao Mo.
Watching Jingci's playful antics, Xiao Mo sighed helplessly, and had no choice but to pretend not to notice her, turning his full attention back to listening to the teacher's lesson.
"What is so worth listening to about this anyway? Why is Xiao Mo being so serious? Are you afraid of being deceived by girls when you grow up or something?"
Tushan Jingci puffed her cheeks and muttered quietly but since Xiao Mo was ignoring her, she had no choice but to turn her attention back to the lesson.
Only the teacher's voice was like a lullaby, and it was making Tushan Jingci's eyes grow heavier and heavier with sleep.
Before long, Tushan Jingci's small head began to nod lower and lower, like a little chick pecking at grain.
The drowsy little girl was quickly spotted by the teacher.
The teacher walked over and, with resignation, picked up the discipline ruler and rapped it on her desk.
Tushan Jingci was so startled she shuddered, and even her tail puffed up in alarm. She snapped awake immediately.
Tushan Jingci looked around and found all the other children laughing at her, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment.
At long last, after enduring an entire morning, the study hall dismissed for the day.
Tushan Jingci, exhausted beyond measure, flopped directly onto her desk, feeling her head buzzing and humming.
She felt as though she had taken in a great many things, and yet somehow could not recall any of it.
"Are you Tushan Jingci?"
Just as Tushan Jingci was about to head back to her courtyard, several little girls came up to her side and asked.
"Mm, I am Tushan Jingci. What is it?" Tushan Jingci tilted her small head and asked with curiosity.
"Jingci, you are so beautiful! Would you like to come and play with us?" Another little girl asked. "I heard the Peach Blossom Peak is covered in peach blossoms right now. They are said to be gorgeous."
"Looking at peach blossoms?" Tushan Jingci paused for a moment, then nodded her small head happily. "Sure, sure! After I eat lunch, I will come and find you with Xiao Mo, and we can all go together."
"Xiao Mo?" A little girl named Huamei asked with puzzlement. "Who in our study hall is called Xiao Mo?"
"Xiao Mo is my friend. He is standing outside the window right there, see."
As she spoke, Tushan Jingci pointed toward Xiao Mo, who was waiting outside the study hall in the distance.
"Jingci, he is a human. He has no standing to attend our gathering."
"Yes, yes. My mother says humans are very unclean. Why would Jingci want to be friends with a human?"
"Mm, I also heard from my father that humans are low and inferior beings."
"Jingci, you can bring anyone you like, but you cannot bring a human."
Seeing that Xiao Mo was a servant, and a human at that, the little girls' expressions changed at once, and they all began to speak up.
Tushan Jingci listened to each of their words, her brow furrowing tighter with each one, anger rising steadily in her eyes. "What are you saying! I am not going to let you talk about Xiao Mo like that! I do not want to see any peach blossoms! Move! I do not like any of you!"
With those words, Tushan Jingci grabbed her book, hopped down from her chair, and marched out like a little hen who had picked a fight.
"Hey? Jingci..."
The other little girls stood frozen in place, not one of them able to understand why any demon would get angry over a human.
"What happened? Did they bully the Young Miss?"
After Tushan Jingci walked out of the study hall, Xiao Mo asked with puzzlement.
"No, they did not bully me." Tushan Jingci glanced back once, then looked away. "They wanted to invite me to go and look at peach blossoms."
"Is that not a good thing?" Xiao Mo smiled. "Young Miss could make a few more friends."
"I am not going." Tushan Jingci said with a huffy air.
"Why?" Xiao Mo was even more puzzled now.
"No reason. Not going is not going."
Tushan Jingci placed the books she had been carrying into the bamboo box on Xiao Mo's back, then grabbed his sleeve and walked with him toward the exit of the study hall.
"Come on. We are not playing with them. We are going home!"
